Dylan Thomas: Do not go gentle into that good night

In the first verse, we find the two principal lines that reflect the whole poem. The words “Do not go gentle into that good night” is the order that the poet gives to his father, the order that tells his father… don’t let yourself die so easily, the order that says… fight against death!

“Going gentle” is to accept the death before it comes, to let himself die without any other option.

“That good night” is the symbol of the death itself, a metaphor that the poet uses to refer to the end of life. But at the same time, the poet says that death is something good.

As we can see, from the poem, Thomas recognize the fact that we must not fight against death, but we must fight against the death that has come before its time, we must fight when death is fooling us and it takes us to the other world when we should be alive. In the second line “Old age should burn and rave at close of day”, what Thomas is trying to say to his father is how the older people should notice that the gift of life its life itself and them, and this is why they should fight even harder than others to keep themselves alive, they should fight with rage against death so they can say their last words whenever they want to, and do not let death take them in a passive way.

After the message that Thomas is giving to his father, he shows other people in different circumstances.

In the first group we find wise people, maybe philosophers. They are the ones that know that the darkness is good, because they already know how they should look and what they should have for the final stage of their lives, but they are not going in a peaceful way, because their wisdom have not given the social contribution that they wanted, their words have not shown any sign that improves the life of others, so their great wisdom is useless. Usually we see to the wise people as the braves that had face to nature, in this case to death, but Thomas might be showing a different perspective of this kind of man, he is saying that wise people was not enough wise, that their words were not capable to show any kind of reality but the pure speculation that death is something good and positive, and even though, they are not capable of die peacefully.

After this, the good men that are in the poem, they let life to pass by without any objection, without stop to see the short and fast that life goes away. With the words “bright; green bay” the poet shows a beautiful world, full of happy thins that are the contrast of “frail deeds” that are things without any importance in their lives. It is like if they were sorry for the things that they have done during their lives, as if they were thinking that their lives were meaningless and that what they have done was useless to others.

In the fourth verse, Thomas is speaking about other kind of men, the “wild men”.

In the first line, he makes the use of the sun as a symbol. He talk about the men that are capable to reach the sun while they are singing, but they can not see that with this, the sun is following them so they can not go gentle in to the good night.

This could be a symbolic image of how we spent our lives in a wrong way and how we can see too late that life goes on and that sooner than later, darkness will take us away. In this poem, Thomas teaches us that it does not matter what the wild men could learn from life or the conclusions that they could take from their own experiences, because for them, death will always get too soon and they will get a heavy and empty feeling that each time will take them to their own death.

In the fifth verse of the poem, the “grave men”, Thomas shows us how this grave men, when they are near to death, are too formal to see that death could be something good. This could be a symbol to his father, trying to say that it does not matter if he was blind, wise, wild or grave, through the eyes of his intellect, of his mind, of his interior; he was capable to see great things. Thomas is saying to his father that he must fight against death and share any experience that could provoke his death so he do not loose forever. Thomas is reminding to his father that during the process of death, you can see the real meaning of life, so it is important to fight against death and enjoy this last moments.

The last part of the poem is the union of the whole poem, and it unifies all the images and themes in just one block. This is the moment when the reader can tell that he is talking about his father, because he refers to him in a direct way “and you my father”. The following lines for me are the most important ones “Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears I pray.” Here, Thomas tells us that his father will cry fearfully as a symbol of his fight against death and that maybe his father will bless him or curse him for all what he is making him go through.

This poem obviously is related to the personal life of Thomas and his father, but we can apply it to each one of our lives, because anyone could be in the same situation, the father’s situation, or Thomas’s situation.

The poem makes me think that we must valuate life and to take the best of it, even in our deathbed, that we must not be weak or lazy in our way to death, we must be good, wise, graves and even some times we must get a little bit wild to appreciate what life is offering to us.

Virginia - Laura – Clarissa.

In the movie, Virginia Wolf is a woman that is looking for a way to escape of her reality, she is lost, captured, and she is afraid of the servants because they think that she is a conceited person and doesn’t want to eat their food. She lives between shadows, far away from people. Her intension is to create a good book, a book that is bigger than her self, leaving a part of her literary skills to the world.

Laura Brown (Julianne Moore): Wife and mother, she is pregnant, but she is a very depressive person and the only thing that she is trying to do is to kill herself, because she doesn’t know other way of sets herself apart from others. She feels that she change due to the war and she doesn’t want to stay with the childish dreams of being a good wife during all her life. Because of this, she is the principal reason of the traumas of her son (Richard). Who sensed the intentions of her mother and grows up with resentful feelings and passion for death.

Her purpose in the movie, was to create the perfect cake for the birthday of her husband, she is a perfectionist person trying to create something extraordinary, if we compare this attitude with Virginia’s, both are looking for magnanimity in things and the best way to make her ways to stand out of the normal.

Clarissa Vaughn (Meryl Stripp): She was the corrector of the new century, she has the same name of the main character (not the surname) and is the best friend of Richard (Laura’s son), she is a woman with a very oppressive past, which wasn’t bad at all, and it brings her very happy memories, but at the same time it brings her sadness, because in the present she doesn’t have that happiness and she feels that she needs it back, but she can’t. She had an affair with Richard in her youth, and although she likes women and has her “partner” (Sally), it is obvious that she was always in love with Richard, she takes care of him, and visit him constantly, is her soul mate.

Her purpose in the movie is to recover the feeling of happiness that in some part of her life she had.

-To take care of Richard

-Be a good model of mother to her daughter (Claire Danes)

-Organize in a successful way the party for Richard.

The role of these three women in the movie is to create an image of women during different periods of time in history. Showing their similar life’s, the way they live and the inconformity that the three girls feel due to the male oppression. Making notice of these with their tendency to lesbianism and the depressive neurosis.

IV. DEATH BY WATER

IV. DEATH BY WATER

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

Dead by water analysis and opinion.

This poem you can analyze it with two points of view, one is the literal point of view where you find the sailor Phlebas, a Phoenician that suffer the death by water, that is to say he drowned and while he was falling and dying ,he could see his life through all its stages, since his oldest moment until his youth ,which is something very explicit and clear in the poem, But if we analyze it in a more deep way, we can see the poem as the representation of the baptism or something similar, where a way of life dies and a new one is born, the sin dies through the water, and through water born the spiritual life… The old “me” is dead and a new man is born, a man without sin and with a different strength or energy is showed at the end of this process of purification, the same is showed in the poem.

Alliteration:

-Phlebas the Phoenician…

-Fortnight dead, Forgot

Prolepsic: (figure that shows anticipation to an event.)

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead, Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.

It is saying that he was already dead and after that, are mentioned the things that he already forgot.

Metaphor:

The whole poem can be seen as a metaphor if you see it with the second point of view mentioned previously.

Speaker : The speaker Is a man telling the story of Phlebas , the Phoenician.

Mood: Calmed, Thoughtful.

Where is the setting? : The sea.

My process...

I got in the “Universidad De Las Americas” in the year 2004. In the same year I was graduated from the “Liceo Pedro Poveda” and as everybody; at the end of the school stage I had to choose a career. I was almost completely lost, the only thing that was clear for me, was that I liked languages and English was my first choice, so after a lot of thinking, the career that I choose was teaching English… to be a teacher.

The first two years were the most difficult, I was about to change my mind, there were lots of teachers that I didn’t like, due to their way of teaching, and even worst, I didn’t think that they were very good at it. The truth is that during the whole process I have found the same problem, some teachers are good, but lots of other teachers don’t. That dichotomy was bothering me a lot.

To the preceding, I can add that I wasn’t very motivated with the idea of teaching to these new generations, where you can find a lack of interest in the classes, while the teacher is trying to do the best for them to learn.

That lack of motivation was converted in a kind of fear for me, but this fear disappear completely with the first teaching practice. When I started, I realized that the choice taken two years before was the right one. This experience showed me that there is something very special at the moment of teaching, and look my self helping kids is incredibly gratifying.

The second teaching practice, was a fundamental event for me, even more than the fist teaching practice, because with this I understood the meaning of being a teacher, know how does it feels, the difficulty of stay in front of a class and teach, create a link with the students, between lots of other things that are difficult to explain completely, things that you only understand when you are living the situation. With this I could have the image of my self, being a teacher.

Today, in my fourth year of studying, my view is completely different to the beginning; the time showed me that this was the best choice I’ve ever made, now I’m much more optimistic and I realized that I really had a vocation, which tells me that the challenge is big and that the generations are always changing, but not because of that I have to quit, on the contrary, I will be working every day harder, because I am sure that I will be good at this.

Music, the art of combining sounds

The first instruments were any object or human part of the body that emit sounds.

One of the first instruments created by man was the Flute, which at the very beginning was a bone with holes.

To begin with, I’m going to explain that this work is divided in to four parts, the first one is the Greek era as the older one, then it will continue with the Middle Age and the renascence, and finally the XX Century.

In the Greek era, is the place where the music has its start and where we can find the first documents of music, math, philosophy and other fields of study. For them, music was very special, they used it in weddings, funerals, births and other religious ceremonies, but always related to dance and poetry.

Music in those times was very important and Greeks use it even in the fields of education, by giving information to the kids through music.

In the Middle age, the Catholic Church becomes the central theme in the society. During those times, the Gregorian singing ruled all the territories, due that the culture and power is in the hands of the monks and religious people. Even though, the secular music has its place, over all in the low Middle Age, with the participation of the jongleur and minstrels which used to act in castles, palaces and in the streets.

During The Renascence, the sculptures and music stop being only as a sign of praise to God and their goal is to create beauty.

In the renascence there is an increase in the musical aspect, established by the humanist over the importance of culture, and it is here when music start to increase and experiment a big development. Whit this, musicians had to start to specialize and to dedicate their live to the art of music.

In the XX century, the world of music is influenced by the cultural and society changes, now there are new kinds of styles of music, such as Jazz, Rock, which take an important part and remove the classical and cultured music, and their branches, which for some time were the most important styles, but with the pass of time, the new styles, and the influence of technology, alter the way in how people create and interpret music.

As we can see, music is always changing, but is it for good?

The new styles and fashions influenced in music, and the same music is now affecting the view of the world and the way in how people live, this can be seen in the new generations, which are much more liberal than the older ones, the lyrics, and the way of presenting this art, which in my opinion, is starting to loose the meaning of art.
